Note that 505DSP serial numbers begin with 91900 and followed by 3 more digits. The control head serial numbers begin with 91800 with 3 more digits. They are not necessarily the same last 3 digits as each other as mentioned below in Dan Kimball's memo.
We consider the official serial number for a 505DSP to be the one on the nameplate affixed to the rear panel of the enclosure. The one which appears when polled via a software control program is stored in the battery backed RAM memory on the PC401 module and can be changed (or garbled too!) at will and of course inserting a different PC401 module will show a different serial number.

Serial Number Information
Some information regarding serial numbers (originally in an email from Dan Kimball, repair tech at Kachina, slightly edited):
When the unit was assembled, the serial numbers were entered via the proprietary calibration software and should match the serial number on the rear of the chassis by the antenna ports. The serial number on the control heads are just for tracking of the control head and don't have to match the unit number. Some do some don't. The Radio serial numbers won't change with a change of firmware or software. They will however change if the calibration data becomes corrupt, usually to a random arrangement of integers. At one time PC401 boards were inadvertantly swapped after a serial number was entered during production. Also several boards were sent thru mail as replacements without a serial number change. Considering the way some of the dealers and Hams swap equipment and boards from unit to unit it is surprising to me to find a unit with a corresponding serial number, but believe it or not, most match. Non matching serial numbers usually will not effect the function of the radio, non matching firmware and software versions will cause problems of variable severity, however, depending on the type of mismatch. Another concern with board swaps are the HARDWARE versions. Some are not totally compatible!!!
